From what I have observed during hundreds of local home visits, the main barrier to improved mobility is simple apprehension about the actual fitting day. Knowing exactly what to expect during a stairlift installation helps you plan effectively. We often meet residents who delay their decision because they worry about builders ruining their hallway plasterwork.

The reality is far less intrusive than most people imagine.

As a family-run business deeply rooted in Greater Manchester, our team is dedicated to helping residents regain independence at home safely and smoothly. Your daily routine remains mostly undisturbed. Let us look at the facts behind the fitting process and outline exactly how to prepare for a successful fitting.

Before Installation Day: The Home Survey

Everything starts with a free home survey guided by strict British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) standards. Our engineers, either Roger or myself, will visit your property to map out the exact dimensions of your steps. A common misconception is that your stairs are too narrow. We actually only need a minimum width of around 73cm (29 inches) to safely accommodate a standard seated model.

Here is what the survey covers:

  • Precise staircase measurements: We record the exact length, width, and any angles or bends using digital measuring tools.
  • Mobility assessment: Evaluating your specific physical needs ensures we recommend a model with the right seat height and control types.
  • Transparent quoting: You receive a clear, written quotation covering all stairlift costs immediately, free from hidden charges.
  • Questions and answers: Your family members are welcome to join the discussion to ensure everyone feels comfortable.

We arrange an installation date that works for your schedule once you decide to proceed. Standard straight stairlifts are typically fitted within just three to five working days. Properties requiring curved stairlifts need a custom-built track. This process usually takes three to four weeks while the factory shapes the track to match your home perfectly.

What Happens on Installation Day

Arrival and Preparation

Your installation engineer will arrive at the agreed time to introduce themselves and confirm the plan. We immediately lay down protective dust sheets and wear clean shoe covers. Protecting your carpets and hard floors is a major priority for us. You will get a quick walkthrough of the schedule before any tools come out of the van.

Fitting the Rail

The extruded aluminium rail is the essential track that carries the chair securely upstairs. Many people worry about the structural impact on their property during this phase.

  • Tread fixing: The rail brackets are screwed directly into the wooden stair treads, avoiding the wall completely.
  • Plaster protection: Drilling into the steps prevents any damage to your decorative wallpaper or skirting boards.
  • Clearance space: A fitted track typically leaves around 12 to 15 inches of walking space for other household members.
  • Straight setups: Standard rails are cut to the exact millimetre on-site for a perfect fit.
  • Curved designs: These tracks arrive in modular sections and bolt together precisely as planned.

Mounting the Stairlift Unit

The main carriage block slides onto the completed rail once the track is fully secured. Our engineers then attach the padded seat, footrest, armrests, and the internal motor. Standard UK units easily support up to 130kg (20 stones).

Heavy-duty models are available if you require a higher weight capacity of up to 160kg. We run several empty test loops to verify that the carriage glides smoothly along the entire track.

Electrical Connection

Modern mobility lifts run efficiently on sealed 12V DC batteries located inside the carriage. A small charging transformer simply plugs into a standard 13-amp domestic socket near the stairs. We ensure the cables are neatly tucked away using discrete trunking.

The batteries charge automatically whenever the chair parks at the top or bottom of the staircase. This low-voltage setup costs approximately £15 to £20 a year in electricity to run. Power cuts will not leave you stranded on the stairs because the internal battery holds enough charge for several emergency trips.

Testing and Demonstration

Every fitting concludes with a rigorous safety inspection conforming to the strict BS EN 81-40:2020 British Standard. Our team checks every single mechanical and electronic component before handing over the controls.

  • Continuous travel: Checking for smooth ascents and descents without jerking.
  • Obstruction sensors: Testing the sensitive pressure pads on the footrest that stop the lift if an object blocks the stairs.
  • Seat controls: Verifying the seat belt clicks securely and the manual swivel lever operates lightly.
  • Remote operation: Making sure the wall-mounted remote controls can call the chair from another floor.

We encourage you to take the chair for a few test rides while the engineer is still present. Practising the controls builds your confidence quickly. The job is only finished when you feel entirely comfortable using the equipment independently.

How Long Does Installation Take?

The total time on-site depends entirely on the layout of your property.

Stairlift TypeTypical Installation TimeTechnical Considerations
Straight stairlift1.5 to 2.5 hoursSingle linear track cut to size on-site
Curved stairlift3 to 5 hoursComplex modular bends requiring careful levelling

Straight setups represent a very fast process. Most standard jobs wrap up in under two hours. We use standard power drills that generate around 80 decibels of noise, similar to a vacuum cleaner. This moderate noise only lasts for about twenty minutes while the brackets are fixed.

Curved layouts demand a longer appointment because aligning the custom bends takes careful precision. These complex fittings are still easily completed within a single morning or afternoon.

Do I Need to Prepare Anything?

Very little preparation is required before the engineer knocks on your door. Our priority is to keep things as stress-free as possible for you.

Here are three simple ways to help the morning go smoothly:

  • Clear the steps: Remove trailing phone cables, shoes, bags, or decorative plant pots from the stairs.
  • Check the plug sockets: Ensure access to a standard wall socket within three metres of either the top or bottom step.
  • Put the kettle on: A quick cup of tea is a wonderful treat for the hard-working engineer.

We can recommend safe cable routing solutions if you lack a nearby power outlet. You never need to lift heavy furniture or hire decorators prior to our arrival. The entire fitting process is completely self-contained.

What About Mess and Disruption?

A clean and tidy workspace is a professional requirement for every fitter. Our engineers bring their own vacuum cleaners to suck up any sawdust created during the bracket fitting. Because the metal track fixes directly to the wooden treads, you bypass the heavy plaster dust associated with wall mounting.

Your home is left exactly as it was found. The staircase remains fully accessible for other residents and visiting family members. We install units designed with slimline folding hinges. The folded seat, arms, and footrest typically protrude just 13 inches from the wall when parked. This clever folding mechanism leaves plenty of safe walking room for pedestrians.

After Installation

Every new machine includes a comprehensive 12-month parts and labour warranty. Our commitment to your safety extends long after the final test ride. The internal batteries generally last between two and five years before needing a simple replacement.

Routine maintenance prevents unexpected breakdowns and keeps the mechanical parts moving quietly. We strongly recommend booking an annual stairlift servicing appointment to ensure peak reliability. BHTA guidelines suggest this yearly check is the best way to prolong the life of your equipment.
